Back To Bakers

Overview

Tucked along 184 Barryville - Yulan Rd, Barryville, NY 12719, Back To Bakers is one of those rare spots that instantly feels like home the moment you walk in. The smell of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the comforting aroma of sizzling bacon and buttery pancakes, making it hard not to smile before you even sit down. Whether you’re a local or just passing through the Catskills, this diner-style restaurant serves the kind of food that makes you slow down and savor each bite.

I first stumbled into the place on a foggy Saturday morning after a long hike nearby, hungry enough to eat a mountain. What I found was something far better-a place that blends nostalgia with genuine hospitality. The wooden interiors, handwritten chalkboard menu, and warm greetings from the staff gave me that cozy “Sunday breakfast at Grandma’s” feeling. Their menu isn’t massive, but it’s filled with the classics done right-fluffy omelets, golden-brown French toast, and hearty sandwiches stacked with local meats and cheeses.

What stands out most is their commitment to local sourcing. According to the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, more than 70% of the restaurant’s ingredients come from nearby farms. This dedication not only supports local agriculture but also ensures that every dish bursts with fresh, seasonal flavor. Their famous buttermilk pancakes are made with locally milled flour and farm-fresh eggs, while the maple syrup is tapped just a few miles away. The result? A plate of pancakes that taste like comfort and countryside combined.

I had the chance to chat with one of the owners, who mentioned that the idea behind the diner was to “bring back the spirit of old-school American dining.” And that’s exactly what they’ve achieved. The place doesn’t rely on trends or gimmicks-it’s about honest food served with pride. The staff knows many regulars by name, often remembering their usual orders. That personal touch gives the restaurant its soul, and it’s what keeps people coming back week after week.

During my visit, I couldn’t resist trying their house special-crispy fried chicken paired with creamy mashed potatoes and sweet corn. The chicken had that perfect crunch-to-juiciness ratio that only true comfort food can deliver. For dessert, their homemade pies stole the show. The apple pie, in particular, deserves its own fan club-warm, cinnamon-laced, and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that slowly melts into perfection.

In terms of reviews, it’s not just locals who rave about this place. Online food reviewers and travel blogs consistently highlight its blend of down-to-earth atmosphere and quality cooking. One recent review on a regional food site noted that Back To Bakers “brings the kind of warmth you can’t fake-where the food and the people are equally genuine.” That sentiment sums it up perfectly.

What makes this restaurant truly special is its sense of community. It’s common to see families sharing breakfast, hikers fueling up after a trail, and bikers grabbing a quick coffee before hitting the road again. On weekends, you’ll often find a small crowd outside, chatting while waiting for a table, yet no one seems to mind. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and that’s part of its magic.

Even the pricing reflects the diner’s grounded philosophy-affordable without cutting corners. You can enjoy a full breakfast or lunch without spending a fortune, and you’ll walk away satisfied, both in appetite and spirit. For anyone visiting Barryville or exploring Sullivan County, this spot is a must-stop destination.

Restaurants like this remind us why good food matters-it’s not just about eating but about connection, comfort, and tradition. Back To Bakers captures that beautifully, blending familiar flavors with genuine heart. Every bite feels like a small celebration of local culture, served up with a smile and a side of nostalgia.

Great spot, fantastic owners and staff, highest praise only! They offer outdoor dining which we take full advantage of bc I’m immune compromised. The food is always great, Taco Tuesday is our favorite with $2 tacos & $5 margaritas (best in the area). Wine Wednesday’s are great too, fabulous pizza offerings with a free bottle of wine. My fave menu item is the Bakers Wrap & the onion rings. We ask for our fries extra crispy and they are the ONLY restaurant that has honored that request. Alex comes up with some great specials as well, always kicking it up a notch with new and exciting flavors. Kerri & her staff are absolutely amazing, friendly, fun, attentive and the absolute hardest working folks! The restaurant, restrooms and outdoor area are always neat & clean (right down to the ketchup bottles…ya’ know in a lot of places they are nasty but not here!) We eat here at least once a week if not twice! Love the food and the company! Kind of that home town pub “where everybody knows your name!”

Baker’s is one of my regular stops in this area. Although the regular menu is limited, there are daily specials that are always good. I’ve never left disappointed. The wait staff and even the bus staff are very attentive. Friends and family who visit always ask to go there.

Friends asked us to go here for a quick bite. It was a Wednesday. We ordered the $20. pizza and bottle of wine special. The wine was good the pizza was great. We shared a couple of appetizers and the bill came to $47.00 before a tip. Stephanie was our server, she was fantastic, never overbearing, she gave us the right amount of attention. Great deal for 4 people. Highly recommend!

Wow, what a hidden gem in the mountains of Yulan! Many other great reviews steered us to check out this local favorite dining destination. Upon our arrival, our reserved table placed us in the “dining room” which is just off the spacious bar area. There were many dining in the bar area at high top tables also enjoying the daily specials. The dining room offers low tables and can be set up to accommodate larger groups. The walls & ceiling should be updated with some acoustic panels as the noise level can create a cacophonous experience which can be difficult for some diners. However somewhat noisy you may find the warm setting, when you scan the menu, it’s easy to dismiss some items as standard fare... our group explored the somewhat short menu. Here’s what we checked out: Seared Ahi Tuna (special) A+++ awesome!!! Fried Cod Tidbits (menu) A+++ made fresh!! Steamed Clams(menu) A++ delicious broth!! Irish Nachos (menu) A+++ amazing!!! Dinner Entrees: Teriyaki Tri Tip Steak (special) A+++ superb!!! Pulled Pork Sandwich (menu) A+++ yummy!!! Iron Skillet Burger 12oz (menu) A+++ Burger goodness!!! Overall, a great find... deliciously prepared unique menu & daily specials each day posted on their Facebook page! We will return and plan to dine in the bar area ... soon!!!

I love tacos truly I do. So when I was seeing what to get for dinner I was pleasantly surprised to see this restaurant pop up on my local eateries. I want to start this by saying I am a little picky. I ordered two beef tacos, one pork taco and a carne asada steak taco. I also ordered an appetizer of their mussels. I’m currently on a journey to find the best mussels at my local restaurants. Starting with the beef tacos these were delicious! Topped with back to bakers crunchy slaw and an amazing blend of pico da gallo with some onion and cilantro tossed in they were my second favorite out of the mix up. The reason they were my second is because I had no choice but to leave the first spot to the absolutely delicious carne asada steak taco. I wish I got more of them! The way the lime juice mixed with the steak and toppings was phenomenal. Out of all the tacos I have to say the pork just wasn’t for me. I think I was expecting more flavor but when put up against the other flavors it fell a bit flat and just wasn’t to my taste. I know for next time now and overall the other tacos were so delicious that it didn’t even matter. To end it off the mussels my word the mussels were beautiful. Large and sitting in a tasty white wine garlic mix. The tray I got was loaded and the sourdough you get with the appetizer is so good with the broth of the mussels. I definitely would recommend this spot. For the price you pay you cannot beat it. I will be back and look forward to my next meal.

Amazing food. From simple pub food to exquisite steaks and seafood. Taco Tuesday and Wine Wednesday are a huge hit, plus an excellent full bar.
